NARCISSISM AND THE ILLUSION OF FAIR PLAY
I've noticed a troubling misuse of the phrase "treat others the way you want to be treated." While it's meant to encourage fairness and empathy, it's often taken to an extreme and used to justify narcissistic behavior.
Some individuals will mimic or mirror your every move, claiming they are simply treating you the way you treated them. The key difference is that a narcissist doesn't understand the appropriate context for this kind of "treatment."
For example, a parent might discipline a child to ensure their safety and a brighter future. Imagine if the very next day, they try to "discipline" the parent, believing they are just treating them the way they were treated. Similarly, a doctor who has obligations to treat his patients be treated by his patients such as doing some serjury or writing presiscription claiming they trying to "treat" the doctor back.
Unfortunately, this list goes on and on . People with narcissistic tendencies confuse genuine acts of fair treatment with personal attacks. This allows them to justify harassing others by claiming they are just following the rules.
