There are people who, no matter what, view others' actions through the lens of their own guilt. This is a common psychological reaction for those with something to hide; even a fictional police siren can cause them distress.
You see a similar dynamic with individuals who present a kind facade but are truly bullies and abusers. Their victims, living with this hidden reality, often feel that anything they do could inadvertently expose the abuse.
