THE MIRAGE OF MIRRORING
The phrase 'treat people the way you like to be treated' is often misinterpreted. While its intention is to promote kindness and empathy, some individuals use it as an excuse to mirror others' behavior without considering the context, responsibilities, or boundaries.
This mirroring behavior can create a toxic environment, leading to emotional, mental, and even physical distress. For instance:
- A doctor or lawyer repeating your words instead of providing expert advice or treatment.
- Customer service representatives or business partners mimicking your words without addressing your concerns.
- In personal relationships, mirroring behavior can be a sign of emotional manipulation or gaslighting.
Those who engage in mirroring behavior, particularly in professional settings, demonstrate a clear sign of irresponsibility and negligence.
When individuals in positions of authority, who are paid to perform specific duties, instead repeat back what you say without taking action or providing expertise, they are failing to fulfill their responsibilities.
