THE DARK SIDE OF COMPARISON

It is recalled that in school, students were taught to measure their status by comparing it to others. A motivational talk emphasized not being jealous of those with better living conditions, as many others faced worse circumstances. Unfortunately, this statement was later misused to disregard harassment and suffering.

Some individuals exploited this message to trivialize others' struggles, asserting that others had it worse. This harmful comparison permeated various aspects of life, including healthcare and education.

Efforts and accomplishments were consistently belittled by comparing them to those perceived as smarter, faster, and better. Pain and suffering were dismissed by comparing them to more severe situations.

This example illustrates how knowledge can be beneficial when applied responsibly but destructive when misused.
